Today we worked on making arrays, which is the start of our multiplication and division unit. I decided to spice things up a bit and we used cheerios to make arrays! The kids loove this! They were able to manipulate the cheerios easily.
I first explained what an array is and how it relates to multiplication. I made a few arrays on the board and then I passed out cheerios. I would write the problem (2 by 4)on the board and the kids worked in groups to make they array. I then had the students use the cheerios and transfer the array they made to a worksheet.

On to some more pressing news...
I think I mean I will I mean I AM getting rid of my desk. Ok I said it! Phew! I am glad I got that out. I have been thinking about it ever since Erika over at
The Honey Bunch got rid of hers. I have my desk up against a large table and it takes up so much room. I decided to keep the table (but move it) and get rid of my desk. Today I moved my computer onto the table and actually moved the table. My super awesome janitor said she would move my desk out tomorrow afters school. While I was moving my computer I decided to unplug all the s*** I don't use that is attached to my computer. My lovely tech-guy has a nice big pile to come by and pick up in the morning! Opps sorry!
I didn't leave it all over the floor...I put it in a nice big pile instead! :) Here is a picture of what my "teacher" area looks like after I moved the table and the computer. I will take some more pictures when I get everything organized and my desk out of here! Well off to do
busy work I mean homework, sorry typo! Almost TGIF!

Crisscross Applesauce in First Grade
I totally agree with Holly - so much better without a desk! I was like you and had some separation anxiety at first but it was SO worth it. I'm a new follower!
Ditto! I haven't had a desk in YEARS. And the only thing I have to work on is keeping all the stuff that used to pile there, off the small group table:-)

Love the Cheerio arrays! Only problem is that I would count three...eat three...count three...eat three, etc! lol

I agree with the others! I haven't had one in years and I have never missed it! Congrats on your huge step, I remember how hard it was to do. I can't wait to see the after pictures when the desk is moved.
Love the cheerios...brilliant idea!

Like your array idea. Everything seems to go better with food! Agree with getting rid of the desk. I am so wanting to get rid of mine.

Loving the cheerio arrays!!! How cute are those?!?! :) I taught arrays last year with tiny marshmallows and my kids loved it :) Have a great rest of your week :)

Made In The Shade In Second Grade
Why is it that all the cool 2nd grade teachers are teaching multiplication and division? I feel so left out :( In Virginia it's a 3rd grade standard, so 2nd grade misses out on it. IF (that's a huge if) we have time at the end of the year I try to do a little with it, but that usually never happens. Cute idea with the Cheerios :) Maybe I can find a few minutes to do that with my higher math students :)

Following Optimism
I just got rid of my desk (after debating about it for months) and I'm so glad I did! I have more space to work with my kids and less room to dump stuff. I made sure I had a place for everything to go first (important paperwork, supplies, etc) and now I don't know why I didn't do it sooner! Good luck!

Smiling In Second Grade
What a great idea :) My kids love doing arrays, but sometimes struggle with making even rows & columns - this would be perfect!!
Happy Friday

Love the idea of cheerio arrays!
I'd get rid of my desk but my computer is on it and it's the computer that is attached to my Smartboard. Plus it's shoved in a corner and doesn't take up that much space. :)

Stories From Second
Hi Kelley:
I'm a no-desk gal too! No room for it with all those hulking 6th graders. Space (in the room--well, outer space too, I guess!) is a wonderful thing. I love the way the light comes in through your windows. Looks like a happy place to learn.
Enjoy the weekend!

Finding JOY in 6th Grade
Congrats on getting rid of the desk. I can't wait to see the after pictures. I haven't regretted my move at all. Although yesterday my sub kind of freaked out! :)

The Best Endings
Love teaching that incorporates food- it really adds that interest and motivation for the students. My students had difficulty remembering what rows vs. columns were. I made a poster that showed what a row was and what a column was. That seemed to help a bit. Does anyone have any other ideas?
Its been evident and professionals in this regard have shown much better understanding so there are best provisions to be followed. cv personal statement sample
