March Currently!
Well again this will be short and sweet. I still did not finish that paper and I am still not looking forward to it. Can't I just pay someone to finish my last 4 classes for me?? No I guess that would be unprofessional and dishonest. Something I know is unacceptable. Hey a girl can dream though!

Crisscross Applesauce in First Grade
I like to show them what the molecules are like in each one (check Pinterest for some great anchor charts of each state of matter). Then, I let them do The Molecule Dance! They are molecules and I can warm them up with my voice or a red flashlight (I just cover with red Saran Wrap or color the top with a dry erase marker) and cool them down with a blue one. If they are a solid, they have to link elbows and stand close together, slowly shaking (because the molecules are always moving). If I warm them up into a liquid, they hold hands and move apart a little, making waves with their arms. As a gas, they get to separate from each other and run around. We move between the states of matter with me periodically asking them what state they are in. The kids LOVE it, and really get a good understanding of what causes state changes, and what the molecules are like in each state.
It's fun to let them decide how to make water change states, especially with a hair dryer, too!

Feel better! Solids, liquids, and gases is one of my favorite units to teach! It's easy to do lots of stuff with food and, if you subscribe to Brainpopjr, there are some great videos!
One thing we do to talk about changing states of matter is I give them a baggie with some chocolate chips inside and they have to figure out how to change them into a liquid! Then we leave them alone overnight and, in the morning, it's a solid (blob!) again!

We made an iceman that I found on Pinterest - the kids loved observing him throughout the day as he melted...his head fell off over night and the kids had to infer what had happened because all that was left of his head were the construrction paper eyes and nose soggy on the table - instead of in the tub filled with water.
They are still talking about this!
We also made a poster with cheerios to show how molecules look in a solid, liquid and gas. This seemed to help the kids grasp the concept...pinterest was a great inspiration for this unit!
